Prime Minister Addresses Jute Industry on the Occasion of National Jute Day 2024 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, urges the exploration of new markets
In an address marking National Jute Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasised the importance of discovering innovative jute products and expanding their reach in global markets to bolster the export of this prized fiber and foster a prosperous “Sonar Bangladesh.”
“Discover diversified jute products and explore their new markets abroad to increase its exports as the environmentally-friendly product has a huge demand (at home and abroad),” she urged during the inauguration of six jute mills and the “Diversified Jute Goods Fair -2024” at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Dhaka on the occasion of National Jute Day.
Jute Markets to Get a Boost
Stimulus packages are on the horizon for the jute sector, affirmed the premier, highlighting her government’s commitment to supporting jute as both an agricultural staple and a vital export item.
“We will offer stimulus packages for the jute as an agricultural and export item,” she reiterated, underlining the government’s dedication to ensuring financial benefits for entrepreneurs and the nation alike.
Drawing attention to the significance of the jute sector, Sheikh Hasina entrusted its caretakers with the responsibility of harnessing its potential for economic prosperity. “I am asking you all involved in jute, to take care of the sector as I have handed over an asset to you. If it is used properly, you and the country will be beneficial economically,” she emphasized.
Encouraging collaboration with foreign investors, she urged leaseholders of jute mills to attract external investment and ensure their efficient operation. “You should keep an eye on the jute mills to make sure its proper operation,” she advised.
The Pivotal Role of Jute
Sheikh Hasina underscored the pivotal role of jute in realizing the vision of a developed, prosperous Sonar Bangladesh by 2041, championing it as the “golden fiber” that holds the key to the nation’s economic advancement.
“The golden fibre is opening the opportunities of the golden days. We have to capitalise the opportunities properly,” she asserted, highlighting jute’s potential to accelerate Bangladesh’s prosperity.
Amidst global concerns over climate change, the prime minister emphasized the relevance of jute products as eco-friendly alternatives, citing their vast scope in addressing environmental challenges.
Reflecting on the resurgence of jute-made products, she hailed the revival of jute sarees, donning one herself at the event. The inauguration of six jute mills has already generated employment for 12,000 individuals, with an additional 28,000 jobs expected upon the opening of the remaining 14 mills.
The prime minister also recognized the contributions of individuals and organisations to the development of the jute sector, conferring honorary crests on deserving recipients.
Exploring New Jute Markets
Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry Golam Dastagir Gazi, and Bangladesh Jute Mills Association (BJMS) Chairman Md. Abul Hossain echoed the prime minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of innovation and collaboration in propelling the jute industry forward.
Secretary of the Textiles and Jute Ministry Md. Abdur Rauf welcomed attendees to the event, setting the stage for a fruitful discussion on the future of the jute sector.
As the nation commemorated National Jute Day 2024 under the theme “Bangabandhu er Sonar Desh, Smart Pat Shilper Bangladesh,” stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing Bangladesh’s jute industry and realizing its full potential on the global stage.
